Hamilton Island, a Popular Tropical Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by US Private Equity Firm.

An iconic resort island located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.

The Reported Sale

The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard regulatory approvals.

The family issued a comment saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

Hamilton Island's Scale and Features

Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.

Approximately thirty percent of the area is developed, featuring a substantial range of facilities:

• Five separate hotels
• Over twenty restaurants and bars
• Twenty shops and retail spaces
• An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
• A boat marina and a functioning airport

Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.

A Look Back at Ownership

The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.

The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.

The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background

The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
