RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.
The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.
RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."
During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
